Review & Description

Two bestselling mystery novels, together in this unique and exciting omnibus:

THE GIANT KILLER
by Richard Vasquez

Ramon Garcia, a Chicano reporter in Los Angeles during the 1970's, is tossed into a political conspiracy while covering boxing events for the world acclaimed and soon to be champion, Bucky Thompson. As he digs deeper into this mystery, danger follows his every step.

In "The Giant Killer," written in a completely different genre than Vasquez' "Chicano," Ramon (Ray) also finds himself falling for the love of his life, Sidney, with whom he must grow into the man he was meant to be. Funny yet stunningly real, Ray, our Giant Killer brings us into a world of exceptionally real characters, with whom we can laugh and cry, as we get to know them. We venture with him as he struggles to know who he really is.

THE MUMMY CASE
by J.R. Rain

Private investigator Jim Knighthorse (from DARK HORSE) takes on a very, very cold case. When historian Willie Clarke dies of mysteriously of dehydration in the California deserts, ex-football hero Jim Knighthorse is hired to dig a little deeper—and discovers a shocking connection to one of the West's oldest mysteries.

Over a hundred years ago, an unnamed cowboy was murdered in the California desert and, due to freak weather conditions, would become mummified within twenty-four hours. Now known to the world as Sylvester the Mummy and displayed in a creepy curiosity shop, Sylvester and historian Willie Clarke will be forever linked in mystery. That is, unless private investigator Jim Knighthorse can survive long enough to untangle one of the West's greatest unsolved murders.

**Acclaim for the novels of Richard Vasquez and J.R. Rain**

“Finally—an authentic and exciting Mexican American character. More importantly, Richard Vasquez portrays him with truth. I hope to meet RAMON GARCIA again and again.”
—RICARDO MONTALBAN, actor

"I read 'Dark Horse' by J.R. Rain. He's the author of 'Moon Dance,' that I reviewed last column. The author is a private investigator, and it shows; this is another fast moving and entertaining detective story. It is the first of a series, published by Lulu.com. Rain is surely destined for larger success, if he can get the right break; his fiction is fun reading."
—PIERS ANTHONY, New York Times bestselling author of A Spell for Chameleon and On A Pale Horse

“In RAMON GARCIA, novelist Richard Vasquez has created a fascinating, bigger-than-life Chicano hero. While Garcia is a hard-hitting, skilled reporter, he is at once tough, sensitive, and humorous. He made me laugh and cry...”
—FRANK SIFUENTES, Latin American Perspective Magazine

"I finished 'Dark Horse' late last night. I enjoyed it immensely—very good story, J.R.! I really liked your dialogue, which kept me chuckling each time I sat down to read the book. Add great character and scene descriptions and a well-paced plot, and you've got a gripping story indeed. I can honestly say your book was as entertaining as anything I've ever read from Patricia Cornwell. I can easily see 'Dark Horse' moving to the big screen!"
—AIDEN JAMES, author of Cades Cove and Deadly Night

“Written with passion and authority, unsparing in its naturalism...Vasquez is a writer of power and honesty, his novel is a chapter in our own history.”
—ROBERT KIRSCH, The Los Angeles Times on Richard Vasquez’s Chicano

"'Dark Horse' is one of the best books I've read in a long time! A great classic detective story with a modern twist. Unique and interesting characters (I think I'm half in love with Jim Knighthorse now!), a great plot that kept me guessing until the end, and some of the funniest lines I've read anywhere. Rain does an amazing job of blending suspense, mystery and humor in this fantastic debut novel destined for the keeper shelf."

Review & Description

Set against the backdrop of the Western landscape, Plucking Wolf Fur tells the story of a disabled man and his 13-year friendship with a wolf-hybrid. James was born with one arm. Throughout his life, he struggled with depression and the acceptance of others. On a whim, he adopted a wolf-mixed puppy named Sequoia. The manuscript takes the reader deep into their lives together, sharing the laughs, tender moments, and adventures.

It was 1993. James was 23. He had nearly flunked out of college, and his parents were in the middle of a divorce. Adding a unique twist to the standard American story, his mom left his father for a woman, creating a new family dynamic.

James wanted a companion. He had few friends at the university and saw no future. Dogs were always important in his family, but James never thought about owning a wolf dog until he read a classified ad: "Malamute/Wolf puppies 8 @ $100." He chose, or was chosen by, the most spirited of the bunch, one an acquaintance would later term "magic."

Sequoia was different. She picked zucchini and garlic from the garden with her mouth, setting them in neat rows. She stole chocolate chip cookies. She survived multiple brushes with death. Most of all, she was independent and strong. As their friendship grew, James gained strength. He founded a magazine and forged a career as a newspaper reporter in the Rocky Mountains. The two were constant companions. Bound together like soul mates, they climbed 14,000-foot-mountains, traveled the country, and lived life together.

Plucking Wolf Fur is Marley and Me meets Poster Child. It demonstrates the powerful bond between an animal and a young man. Readers will learn about the challenges of living with a disability, and how Sequoia brought joy into everyone's life.

The Brevity of Life Part I: Down From The Mountain (Kindle Edition)
By Michael Lavergne

Review & Description

A Serial Novel: Part 1 of 8

'The Brevity of Life' is a fast paced political thriller which paints a lush and vivid portrayal of modern day Thailand and Burma.

Peter Dunn is a middle aged reporter for the Times who has become bitter after the repeal of his Pulitzer Prize. Floundering in New York, he is offered a last chance opportunity to return to Asia.

The journey back coincides with New Year celebrations for much of South-East Asia and the world soon learns that the 'Free Burmese Union' has chosen this time to launch a surprise uprising against the country's military junta.

Rebels seize the properties of multinational companies invested there while the Burmese born former head of the U.N. leads last ditch peace negotiations in an effort to head off more violence. But with the corporations standing to lose billions of dollars, a dark plan is set into motion to hand Burma back to its military masters.

Peter heads into Burma to cover the story as it breaks. Along the way he falls in with Zau Tu, the charismatic leader of an ethnic Kachin rebel faction and together they uncover the sinister plot.

To redeem himself for past sins Peter must make a starkly painful choice between those he holds most dear and the fate of the country which threatens to slip back into brutal repression.A Serial Novel: Part 1 of 8

Review & Description

Forest fires, terrorism, war: explorations of danger by the author of The Perfect Storm.

For readers and viewers of The Perfect Storm, opening this long-awaited new work by Sebastian Junger will be like stepping off the deck of the Andrea Gail and into the inferno of a fire burning out of control in the steep canyons of Idaho. Here is the same meticulous prose brought to bear on the inner workings of a terrifying elemental force; here is a cast of characters risking everything in an effort to bring that force under control.

Few writers have been to so many desperate corners of the globe as has Sebastian Junger; fewer still have provided such starkly memorable evocations of characters and events. From the murderous mechanics of the diamond trade in Sierra Leone to the logic of guerrilla warfare in Afghanistan and the forensics of genocide in Kosovo, this new collection of Junger's nonfiction will take you places you wouldn't dream of going to on your own.The events explored in Fire focus on "people confronting situations that could easily destroy them," and as he demonstrated in The Perfect Storm, Sebastian Junger is skilled at breaking such situations down to their core elements. In this exciting book, he reports on raging forest fires in the Western U.S, war zones in Kosovo and Afghanistan, the deadly diamond trade in Sierra Leone, the plight of travelers kidnapped by guerrillas in Kashmir, the last living whale harpooner on the Caribbean island of Bequia, and the Greek-Turkish conflict on Cyprus. There is also a fascinating chapter on John Colter (explorer, fur trader, and member of the Corps of Discovery led by Lewis and Clark) in which he comments on the need for some to seek adventure as a means of escape from our relatively safe modern world: "Life in modern society is designed to eliminate as many unforeseen events as possible, and as inviting as that seems, it leaves us hopelessly underutilized.... Threats to our safety and comfort have been so completely wiped out that we have to go out of our way to create them." Junger has a keen grasp on this mentality (in fact, he exhibits it himself), and in Fire he clearly explains the fears and difficulties involved in reporting on dangerous events from foreign countries: "You have two weeks to understand a completely alien culture, find a story that no one has heard of, and run it into the ground. It never feels even remotely possible. But it is." And he has done it well in this thrilling book. --Shawn Carkonen

Cambodian Grrrl: Self-Publishing in Phnom Penh
Cambodian Grrrl: Self-Publishing in Phnom Penh (Paperback)
By Anne Elizabeth Moore

Review & Description

In Cambodian Grrrl: Self-Publishing in Phnom Penh, writer and independent publisher Anne Elizabeth Moore brings her experience in the American cultural underground to Cambodia, a country known mostly for the savage extermination of around 2 million of its own under the four-year reign of the Khmer Rouge. Following the publication of her critically acclaimed book Unmarketable and the demise of the magazine she co-published, Punk Planet, and armed with the knowledge that the second generation of genocide survivors in Cambodia had little knowledge of their country's brutal history, Moore disembarked to Southeast Asia hoping to teach young women how to make zines. What she learned instead were brutal truths about women's rights, the politics of corruption, the failures of democracy, the mechanism of globalization, and a profound emotional connection that can only be called love. Moore's fascinating story from the cusp of the global economic meltdown is a look at her time with the first all-women's dormitory in the history of the country, just kilometers away from the notorious Killing Fields. Her tale is a noble one, as heartbreaking as it is hilarious; staunchly ethical yet conflicted and human. The in-depth examination of Moore's stint among the first large group of social-justice-minded young women from the impoverished provinces is told in intimate, mood-evocative, beautifully-written first-person prose. Cambodian Grrrl is the first in a series of short essay collections on contemporary media, art, and educational work by, for, and with young women in Southeast Asia. Part memoir and part investigative report, Moore's story could only be told by her, and the result is illuminating, and vital, reading. Read more

Review & Description

"Upon returning from Afghanistan, journalist John Webster discovers a gang war in his backyard. Now he must find a way to survive in this Canadian warzone—or die in the crossfire.

John Webster has seen the terrible things human beings can do. He’s an experienced investigative journalist, recently returned from the war in Afghanistan. John saw hell over there; he looked death straight in the face. He is glad to be back to the normalcy of his Canadian home—that is, until he realizes there is a war brewing in his own backyard, and “peace” is a word no longer spoken.

John gets caught up in the battle between two of the most powerful and murderous criminal gangs in the city. Using what he learned on the foreign battlefields, he stays alive, despite the price on his head. The only way to save his own life is to find the man responsible for the brutal neighborhood bloodshed. When the police slap a subpoena on him, though, John finds his only solace on the streets.

Suddenly, John is back in a warzone, fighting for his life. Will he be able to stop the bloodthirsty crime lords? The flashbacks to Afghanistan threaten to pull John into darkness. Soon, the past and present collide, and he can’t tell which way is up or down. The need for redemption may be stronger than the need for survival as John Webster finds himself on his most dangerous assignment yet."

Community Journalism: Relentlessly Local (H. Eugene and Lillian Youngs Lehman)
Community Journalism: Relentlessly Local (H. Eugene and Lillian Youngs Lehman) (Paperback)
By Jock Lauterer

Review & Description

No matter how ambitious they may be, most novice journalists don't get their start at the New York Times. They get their first jobs at smaller local community newspapers that require a different style of reporting than the detached, impersonal approach expected of major international publications. As the primary textbook and sourcebook for the teaching and practice of local journalism and newspaper publishing in the United States, Community Journalism addresses the issues a small-town newspaper writer or publisher is likely to face.

Jock Lauterer covers topics ranging from why community journalism is important and distinctive; to hints for reporting and writing with a "community spin"; to design, production, photojournalism, and staff management. This third edition introduces new chapters on adjusting to changing demographics in the community and "best practices" for online community papers. Updated with fresh examples throughout and considering the newest technologies in editing and photography, this edition of Community Journalism provides the very latest of what every person working at a small newspaper needs to know. 13 Seconds: A Look Back at the Kent State Shootings (Hardcover)

13 Seconds: A Look Back at the Kent State Shootings
13 Seconds: A Look Back at the Kent State Shootings (Hardcover)
By Philip Caputo

Review & Description

Thirteen seconds passed. Sixty-seven shots were fired. One nation watched . . .

On May 4, 1970, Ohio's Kent State University was in chaos following President Richard Nixon's announcement that the U.S. bombing of Cambodia would continue, with student protesters on one side and the National Guard on the other. That day, young Chicago Tribune reporter Philip Caputo had been sent to the campus to cover what looked like just another student uprising. But by the time he arrived, things had erupted into one of the watershed moments of the antiwar movement, with four students dead and nine wounded in a hail of bullets fired by panicked guardsmen. Now, thirty-five years later, the author of A Rumor of War looks back on that terrible day, discussing his own emotions, the nature of political discourse and civil disobedience, and what happened to those who were there and how they still live with the pain and anger every day. It was a time when America turned upon itself and our nation's innocence was lost.Philip Caputo, author of the classic Vietnam memoir A Rumor of War, returns to the turbulent era of the late 1960s with 13 Seconds: A Look Back at the Kent State Shootings. Caputo carefully sets the stage for the tragedy--the gunning-down of students on the Kent State, Ohio, campus--as he shows the pressures slowly building: Richard Nixon's decision to invade Cambodia, the militaristic missives of the ultra-leftist Weathermen, and statements such as high-profile California governor Ronald Reagan's declaration about student protests, given three weeks before the shootings ("If it takes a bloodbath, let's get it over with").

While important events surge and roil throughout the book like massive currents, Caputo focuses primarily on the smaller stories of the students injured and killed by National Guard bullets. Caputo, a journalist then writing for the Chicago Tribune (and who went on to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1972), was on the scene soon after the shootings took place. He writes with immediacy, clearly drawn back to the moment even after 35 years have passed. Some of the students who died that day were active in campus politics, while others were caught purely by misfortune, but all paid an incredible price. By allowing readers to understand more about the students and the circumstances that surrounded May 4, 1970, Caputo turns the story of Kent State into a kind of tragic novel. The book itself is short: under 200 pages, including summaries of court testimonies that make up the bulk of the index. But the poignancy of what America lost that day comes through clearly in Caputo's dense, no-nonsense writing. --Jennifer Buckendorff Read more

Plucking Wolf Fur: The story of one arm, one dog and an American family (Kindle Edition)

Plucking Wolf Fur: The story of one arm, one dog and an American family
Plucking Wolf Fur: The story of one arm, one dog and an American family (Kindle Edition)
By James Shea

Dogs were always important in his family, but James never thought about owning a wolf dog until he read a classified ad: “Malamute/Wolf puppies 8 @ $100.” He chose, or was chosen by, the most spirited of the bunch, one an acquaintance would later term “magic.”

Readers will learn about the challenges of living with a disability, and how Sequoia brought joy into everyone’s life.

About the author: James Michael Shea is an award-winning journalist. He has worked at New York Times- and Gannett-owned newspapers. His work has appeared on MSNBC and in the New York Times, Denver Post, Charlotte Observer and the Wall Street Journal.

Review & Description

The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Lenin's Tomb now presents the crucial second act--the attempt to form a Russian state from the ruins of the U.S.S.R. and the chaotic election of 1996. As before, readers will turn to Remnick for the essential story, the flesh-and-blood account of one of history's great turning points. In his first account of Russia, Lenin's Tomb, David Remnick wrote a history paced like a thriller that recast the common understanding of the last days of the Soviet Empire. While most reporters mouthed the standard lines about the "fall of communism," Remnick delivered a gripping account of how the old order in which gangsters ruled through brutal state power lost its hold on the Russian people. Remnick's stunning reportage cut away the myths of the Soviet system to provide the first account of how Eastern Europeans and former citizens of the Soviet Union had long viewed the Soviet regime. The book won the young author his first Pulitzer Prize.

In his new and equally superb book Resurrection, Remnick offers clear-eyed commentary on how the old order of gangsters has given way to a new order. Russia's power elite, he tells us, has embraced the tools and techniques of markets and electioneering to maintain power, while organized crime is fast becoming a major force in the economy. Remnick also describes how the changes in Russia have effected the people themselves. Heart-wrenching chapters on the war in Chechnya, the health and welfare of children (only 15 percent of school children are classified as healthy, and 50 percent are unfit for military service), and the diminished state of Russian letters and literature chronicle the suffering of a once proud nation as it attempts to rebuild itself. Resurrection makes good on Remnick's name and reputation as the best American writer on Russia today. Read more
