Mr. Hearst could not have scripted a better story to herald his arrival in Atlanta than the mysterious shooting of Eugene Grace. Hearst's newly purchased Atlanta Georgian led the way in a "loopy" three way newspaper war with the established Constitution and the Journal to print the latest on the paralyzed victim and his flashy Yankee wife, known as "Daisy of the Leopard Spots." As one editor quickly acknowledged, "Mr. Hearst is stirring up Atlanta."
